I enjoyed BC as the villain (he actually can act, I was surprised) in an 'Oh, he's a believable villain' kind of way and I was grateful at the time that Chekov didn't appear more, because every time he did I wrung my hand in worry that this was going to be the moment. I mean, now that I know he doesn't follow the path of his similarly-uniformed brethren, I can relax. But oh, Sulu's speech...damn! Best part of the movie, for me (besides when the danger passed and Chekov was still alive).

I've seen so many people saying the same about Chekov. I didn't worry for him even for a second because I just assumed there was no way the writers would ever go there, so that killed the tension in the red-shirt moment for me.

Sulu was great (not to mention hot; rawr) and that bit at the end when he says "Captain has a nice ring to it" was lovely.

Maybe minor spoiler?

Yeah, thinking about it now, I can clearly see why the writers would never do that, but at the time I was terrified because Chekov was a minor character whose death would not impact the storyline that much, so his death would be used for ALL DA CREYS! and ugh, just thinking about it now makes my heart hurt.

Haha, well as I've said you certainly weren't alone!

Yea, I just don't think they would ever kill off one of the original Enterprise crew without bringing them back. Someone like Cupcake (I'm still not sure of his fate, actually) sure, but even if Chekov is a minor character he's dearly beloved and an important part of the crew. Doing that would be a stupid move.
