Rinoa hate in FF8 isn't even a slash fandom phenomenon.

yeah sometimes a character just doesn't jibe well with the fandom. Rinoa wasn't well-liked as a character by far more people who disliked her for breaking up whatever their ship was. (Same with Relena, who was mentioned earlier. I haaaaated her in my GW fandom days, but I also nominally shipped 1x2... many years later I found my GW dvds and popped them in and discovered that I STILL hate her, even though I couldn't care less about the ships anymore)

Relena is definitely one of those characters who was famously loathed by shippers, but even in 1999-2000 when I was in GW fandom you could find people who defended her and well-written fics. You just had to step outside the yaoi bubble. Nowadays, she's mostly a cautionary tale about rabid yaoi fans, and most fan portrayals that you can find are largely positive.

Rinoa hate was/is also huge, but it actually eclipses the slash following in FF8 fandom, so laying the blame at slash fans' door here makes no sense to me.

I honestly think Rinoa comes across some of her hate honestly. She is not the most well-written character - all those characteristics that apparently wer emeant to be "cute" came across as vaguely annoying, and the romance felt like it went straight from "Fuck, get out of my face!" to "OMG you're more important than saving the whole damn world!".

However, even so, she gets waaay too much hate.

You know, I recently replayed FFVIII and I thought I might like Rinoa better now that I'm a bit older and less judgemental, but nope. My headcanon that Squall fell under Rinoa's sorceress spell the moment she gets possessed by adel will live on forever. Actually, that's the only interpretation that makes me like Rinoa better, too.

I personally believe their relationship collapses not too long after the end of the game. I once gave it six months, but even that seems charitable.

apart from the "I HATE HER" and "NO SHE IS THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER" contingents that like to go at it, "their relationship is doomed anyway" does seem to be the general consensus

Yeah, though even so, I actually much rather read fic where she's treated nicely and the break-up is a gentle one with them both accepting that they just don't work romantically and would be better just as friends. The problem with the fandom is that fics like that are exceedingly rare.

Omg, I know this is a late reply and you'll probably never read it, but agreed so hard. There's no other sensible explanation for Squall going from "Oh, Rinoa's hanging from a cliff? Well go save her or something, damn, I'm busy here!" to "OMFG YOU'RE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE I'LL BE YOUR KNIGHT AND MURDER EVERYONE IF YOU WANT ME TO FUCK MY RESPONSIBILITIES AS COMMANDER I'LL DO ANYTHING TO SAVE YOU" in such a short amount of time.
