HOW DO I ENGLISH

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-06-04 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, this is a strange question, but I've literally been trying to come up with a way to word the following for ten minutes now and I'm starting to go a bit nuts. Help me, guys!

If someone has tiny braids in their hair, and each braid ends with a bead -- how would you describe it? Would you say that the braids are closed with a bead? Fastened? Tied? Some other word entirely?

I'd say they were "finished with a bead."

That sounds better than what I came up with, thanks!

Is this not a version of dreads? Just say dreads or dreadlocks?

Sorry, I should've explained better -- it's not that type of hairstyle; it's just a couple of small braids in hair that's otherwise loose.

I would just say "beaded braids" or "braids fastened with beads."

No. Not closed. Go with either fastened or tied. Tied sounds more likely though to this hairdresser's daughter since that's how I've heard it most often in my life and read it in books that way too.

I'd flip the order of words around, if the sentence structure allows for it, and go with something like "a bead tied at the end of each braid".
