Rating systems

I always think the rating systems for fanfic have very vague advice on how to rate things. Sure completely harmless stuff is G and very descriptive, graphic PWP is probably E, but I'm always kind of stuck where to draw the line between T and M, especially with sexual content.

Where do you draw the line, f!s?

When genitals start coming out, usually, although I usually rate my fanfiction as more explicit than it is just in case.

If your characters are taking it all the way to funkytown and there's description of it (even if it's not super hardcore) I would probably rate it M rather than T. T is for more like kissing, on top of clothes, "oh my god I touched a boob" type things.

Unless you're writing a really explicit grinding on top of the clothes fic like you go on and on about every detail and it's super dirty, then that would be M.

Also I would say if you're talking in detail about tw topics you should rate it M (like graphic self-harm, suicide, violence, non-con). Also if you swear a lot, depending on how much and what kind, although I view that as looser on the internet than in real life because pretty much everyone in fandom swears on the internet.

Would you show it to teenagers in the presence of their parents? T. Would you not do that? M.

I rate a fic T if it has any bad word but the F-bomb (that's an automatic M), if it has obvious sexual overtones (tent in shorts, damp panties, etc), if the violence is bloody or realistic without getting too detailed/copious, and if sex is described vaguely and not step-by step.

F-bomb, graphically detailed violence or sex, and rape (beyond an off-screen mention that it happened) are all automatic M signs for me.
