To me, getting married has always been one of the few things that's JUST about you and your partner. Maybe there's a cultural component and it's different elsewhere but at least in my region of the US it's not so much about a "union of two families" but a union of two PEOPLE. It's the one day that's all about them and their relationship and if their families don't like the way they choose to do it they can go fuck themselves, or at least that's the opinion of everyone I know.
