What's the first movie or TV show you can clearly remember watching, from early childhood? How does it hold up, looking back on it now?

Mine is the Rainbow Brite movie, Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. I had it on VHS and watched it all the time. I wanted to be Rainbow Brite. To this day it gives me warm fuzzy feelings.

Disney's Sleeping Beauty.
I saw it at a movie theatre, and it was subtitled, but I couldn't read fast enough to actually get all of it.

Star Trek!

Specifically (I'm pretty sure) the TNG episode where they meet Tasha's sister. I just remember it really freaking me out as a very young kid for some reason (and I haven't watched the episode since so I don't know what happens in it)

I guess Snow White, which I saw in the theater when I was three? It creeps me out now though

Looney Tunes shorts

I now find them more witty and actually understand what is going on, but no longer enjoy them or even find them funny vOv

It's a tie between The Animals of the Farthing Woods and Scooby-Doo. I have very, very fond memories of both.

The Smurfs. I have to say that I don't find it as funny as I did back then, but would still watch it.

Some kind of multiple serial cartoon show on Saturday morning? There was Space Ghost, Thundarr the Barbarian (knockoff!), a Flash Gordon animated thing that I loved, Godzilla (and Godzuki). I loved them all, and then I grew up only a few short years and realized they were all terrible terrible, bad animation, bad voices. But my half-formed kid brain sure liked them back in the day!

Seinfeld. I was around three at the time and my parents figured that since I didn't understand something that was 90% talking about adult stuff, they didn't have to hide me away before they watched it. I understood a LOT more than they thought I did, and every time I caught a rerun as I grew up, I understood it a little more. Still one of my favorite shows. :)

I think that plucked bass Seinfeld theme is actually one of my earliest musical memories ever.

But really? Big Wolf on Campus. It was really camp and really, really gay. I loved it. I still love it.

Bucky O'Hare, I haven't watched it since I was a kid though so I only have vague memories of a bright green cartoon bunny fighting frogs(I think?) across the universe.

Pokemon! I seriously could not remember a time in my life where Pokemon was not a part of it. I used to watch the dubbed anime, and my mum bought me a poster with all 150 Pokemon and I looked at it every day until I could recite the names of the Pokemon backwards. Then my dad bought me a Game Boy along with Red and Yellow. I don't watch the anime anymore because I'm kind of creeped out by how Ash just doesn't age, but I still play the Pokemon games a lot <3

omg, after reading through the comments I suddenly remembered a show from when I was very young, two shows in a half hour I think. Hercules and Rocket Robin Hood? I don't remember much about it tho.

But I def remember the original Spider-man, which was scary and amazing, with these weird painted backgrounds and monsters. Theme song is still the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o29VoxtsFk

i'm not sure it was probably sesame street or shining time station or eureka's castle but rainbow brite is in there too and Sailor Moon and some really shitty 80s anime

Probably The Lion King? First movie I saw in theaters and it was one of my favorites.

Either that or Beauty and the Beast or The Swan Princess (ugh I loved this movie so much it's not even funny).

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My first show was Rainbow Brite too. I was like 5. It drove my parents crazy, and looking back I can see why. Goddamn, what an incredibly goofy and 80s cheeseball of a show.

To be honest, the more I try to mull it over in my mind, the more Mr. Rogers keeps telling my mind, "You watched me everyday." So perhaps the earliest memories I have of sitting down and watching tv everyday are Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. Movie wise, probably some kind of kung fu movie, because we had a lot of those when I was little.

Magic School Bus, I think. I saw an episode a few months ago again and it seems to have held up pretty damn well.

Tv shows: Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Hardy Boys Mysteries, Nancy Drew....and i'd say none of them really stand up to the test of time.

Movies...Alien. Jaws. Star Wars. And hell, yes - they stand up. :)

Oh man, I'm not sure...

Probably Full House...I was obsessed as a little kid, and had just about every episode taped on VHS. I can also remember Wonder Years around the same time period.

Full House I just caught an episode of the other day in the middle of the night on Nickelodeon or TV Land or something and thought it was pretty cheesy/dumb. Wonder Years I haven't seen since it was first on so I'm not sure how it would hold up. I want to say possibly a little bit better, but maybe not by much?

Bewitched. It holds up as well now as it did then, considering I was watching it in the mid 90s. I LIVED for Wednesday nights in the summer as a kid because Nick at Nite would marathon it all night long (and I even talked my parents into letting me stay up late to watch it).

I remember very clearly watching All Dogs Go to Heaven and Aladdin in theatres that do not longer exist ;;

As for tv shows, I'd say Heidi, Candy Candy and Mazinger Z (known in Chile as El Festival de los Robots). I suppose I was fated to have a weaboo stage with those beginnings XD

This was, I think, around year 92' or 93'.
