Dreamwidth, LJ or somewhere else?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped blogging properly a good few months ago for a variety of reasons. Recently I've decided to start keeping a paper journal because it'll be easier for me to be honest about my innermost thoughts and feelings that way. Most of my online "blogging" activity has been on Tumblr for the last few months, though I use the term loosely.

Now I'm getting to the point where I feel I'm ready to re-enter the world of actual blogging, with a new account, for stuff that I'd like to share but that doesn't quite belong on Tumblr. Thing is, I'm not really sure where to go now.

I used to be on LJ with a backup on DW. Towards the end of my time at LJ I noticed my friends list going pretty quiet apart from some pretty large comms, so I figure LJ is probably past its prime now and not really worth starting from scratch with. But I'd just like to know, is Dreamwidth actually more active than LJ these days? After the Great LJ Blackout I considered moving to DW completely but I was put off because it seemed pretty sparse when it came to active communities and journals, so to anyone who keeps their regular journal here, would you say that's improved lately?

If not, what other good blogging platforms can you recommend? I realise I'm probably overthinking this a bit, but I'd really like to get back into the discussion side of life/fandom and we all know Tumblr isn't really built for that, so...any help would be appreciated.

(Also, if you can, good theme/layout/skin makers for whichever site you recommend?)

DW is pretty dead and sometimes I regret deleting my LJ. I'm moving towards using Wordpress exclusively.

Is your pesonal account going to just be a tool to get into fan comms? Or are you going to talk about them and actually look for an audience?

I'm not so much looking for an audience as for people I can connect with. I had a circle of friends on LJ but one by one most of them dropped off the radar, and then so did I. Other than that, I'm looking for comms (fandom and non-fandom) that are active and that I can participate in.

I tend to use wordpress, for both my blogs (my Jpop one and the one I'm just starting up).

I crosspost from DW to LJ, but my LJ flist is hardly dead so I might not be the best person to give advice here. I like DW. I think it's easy to use; it has threaded commenting and comment notifications (which platforms like blogger and wordpress often don't). I think there are some pretty active comms on DW and even LJ still depending on what fandom you're interested in.

I don't do anything on tumblr at all, and I don't feel like fandom is dying out of the spaces I inhabit.

to be honest, lj is bleeding users and dw is worse

Depends on your circle of people. My LJ flist is still active even if not as much as it used to be, and the people/comms I follow on DW are actually three times as active. There's less commenting overall though. I still find they're the best platforms for actually getting to know people for me. If you want more of a general public audience something like Wordpress might be good.

I post exclusively to dreamwidth. I have a mirror on IJ just cause, but absolutely no active friends there. :( I update a few times a month here though.
