I think it's just because he's unstable, which makes him threatening, but Moriarty is supposed to be a criminal leader, and the amount of patience it would take to run such an empire doesn't really mesh well with "lol contents will explode in random directions and painted in all the colors of the wind."

In other news, I just watched Pocahontas.

The ONLY way Moriarty strikes me as "menacing" is that I can imagine him flipping out and killing people. As the head of an organization? No. Not buying it.

Eh - I can buy it in the same way I can buy the Joker being a crime boss. But I agree that it's not the most believable interpretation.
