I figure a miniseries is about as close as you can get with film; with six or twelve hours spread across several weeks, they could use the natural climaxes of each chapter and fit many of the subplots in, while keeping enough continuity to keep people interested. But a 2-1/2 or even 3-1/2 hour movie? The rules are just too different, IMHO. You couldn't even spread it across several movies because the stories aren't self-contained enough.
