Me too. tbh, I like it more than any of the other films in the series. >>;

As long as you recognize the objective fact that it's bad, it's perfectly fine to have affection for it.

it's not really an objective fact though, just an overused incorrect opinion.

I was over-exaggerating for the purposes of humor more than a little bit there.

I do think it's a movie that has undeniable flaws. From the perspective of technical movie-making and storytelling, it's not good. But how people respond to it is a separate matter and obviously whether it's enjoyable or not is a matter of opinion.

It's my favorite of the lot, and I watched episodes IV, V and VI when I was a child.

To be fair, the whole "Jew caricature" and whatever was up with Jar Jar Binks flew right over my head. I guess I would have gotten it if I was American?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
wait damn this could have been a secret

It went over my head for a long time, too.

Don't feel bad, anon. I'm American and a Jew, and it still took me a while to catch on that Watto was an offensive stereotype. ._.;;

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I actually didn't even realize he was an offensive stereotype until just now. *headdesk*

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
But was he really? I always wonder how much is really "offensive stereotype" and how much is people just projecting their thoughts on a very simple "mean and evil" cardboard character who just happened to be a merchant.

It's okay to like unpopular movies. It really is. I was quite excited for the prequels and no, they weren't perfect or what most people were expecting, but to me they were fun movies. I've seen better and I've seen worse and it doesn't matter that they weren't groundbreaking, I enjoyed them. *shrugs*

I .. don't even think it was that bad. It has a lot of problems as a movie but it's enjoyable, and mostly holds together.

I love Darth Maul. The only Star Wars novel I ever read was about him (I liked the cover). :P

I actually kinda like it in a guilty pleasure kind of way, since it was the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters back in 1999. Darth Maul was cool, John Williams' score is good (though as far as prequel goes, Ep3 was his strongest score IMO), the Naboo/space battle/Jedi battle is very well done, the podracing scenes were cool, but the one thing that made me gripe is the introduction of midiclorians. Hmmm dunno if I want to watch the blu-ray version because there's the CGI Yoda, which is cool (as far as consistency is concerned), but I liked the puppet that was used for Episode 1.

I really don't see what's bad about Jake Lloyd's Anakin IMO since he was just a child actor at the time and I thought he did a good job.

Overall, it's good right there with Episode 3 as far as prequels are concerned (and this is coming from someone who cherishes the OT with all my heart). I can't wait for Ep. VII.

No worries, OP. It was the first I saw and I had the biggest crush on Qui-Gon (now I'm obsessed with Liam Neeson) and I read a lot of the Jedi apprentice series (and now I kind of wish I'd kept them). I sort of get the hate but it holds a special place. Gotta get into it somehow.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
That one is special to me too. It wasn't the first one I saw (Dad sat me down and popped in the vhs of V when I was 12 or so) but it was the first one I waited in line for and saw in a theater.

And I just loved the costumes and lightsaber battles. They were more beautiful and exciting/heavily choreographed so even if the story was weak it is a nice bit of eyecandy.

I... don't like it, but I canNOT hate it. I liked Revenge of the Sith, I LOATHED Attack of the Clones, but while I don't like Phantom Menace... I just can't hate it ;_; IT GOT ME INTO STAR WARS. I kind of wish I remembered what twelve-year-old me saw in it!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that movie. (Only that one, not the other two). Might have had something to do with being 13 and crushing on Ewan McGregor a tiny bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This was probably my youngest brother's first Star Wars film as well, and though he doesn't like it, one of his favorite characters is Darth Maul and he says it's due to the fact that he really liked the fight at the end and probably always will.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It was NOT a bad movie, no matter what a bunch of fans say.
otakugal15: (fucks)

It's the first one I saw in theaters. I'd see the originals for years before thsi came out. But since it was the first I could see in theaters and at 11, that was HUGELY EXCITING, I'll always hold a special affection for it.

Plus, baby faced!Obi-Wan. Just baby faced!Obi-Wan~
