I really need to bite the bullet and watch the new movie, dammit. I've been putting it off so long, because ever since I first saw the character designs I felt that it was bound to disappoint. That said, I'm personally a Jet/Joe fangirl, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for some good scenes with them...

It is largely their story (but be warned Jet is not...entirely Jet, imo, but you can judge for yourself), so you'll definitely get that in some ways, depending on your tastes.

Of course, there is the requisite canon Joe/Francoise, and in spades, but that shouldn't make the Joe/Jet too bad for you. :)

Yeah, I figured Jet wouldn't be very much like himself -- hell, his new character design (which I hate) makes that pretty obvious.

As for Joe/Françoise... My first introduction to Cyborg 009 was the 1979 series, and it's also the one I love the most. In it, they were never all that canon -- hence I don't mind the pairing, but I've always preferred it more of an ambiguous thing. So if the new movie has it "in spades"... *shrugs*

There are things about the design I hate, and things I like. I miss the nose, quite frankly, and don't understand why they didn't at least give him, say, a roman nose if they wanted realistic. However, I actually LIKE what they did to his body. I know considering the physics of a campy anime series where guys breathe fire and have rocks in their knees is stupid, but I could never quite figure out how Jet flew with rockets in his feet. The new body makes that make sense. Jet not being Jet is mostly because it's like, I feel, they've forgotten he ever had character development.

It's only a few scenes, but it's definitely in-your-face. I didn't think it was in a bad way, and they're not together for most of the movie.

It's weird, and makes no sense, but it is beautiful and Jet is the only really confusing one. GB and Pyunma get far too few scenes, though.

Admittedly I don't know much about Cyborg 009 outside of a couple tv episodes, but it seemed like a really good ensemble series, and I've had similar disappointments with series revivals (whether movies or another season) that don't focus on the relationships I wanted to see more of. Sometimes it can just be the final straw in enjoying something...

It's weird, because the relationships they DID show were one of the few things the movie did right. It just didn't show these two, who were tight in both the 1980 movie and the 2001 series. :(

I don't know this show but I am outraged at the "realistic" designs. The goofy lookin' guys up top who I assume are the original designs (they look familiar) are so much more vibrant than the cookie cutters below.

I feel like staring blankly at my wall while twitching uncontrollably is the appropriate response to everything I've heard about the new movie. I can't with this movie, I seriously can't, but I also can't forget about it.

Well, it follows in the footsteps of the Evangelion movie, the Escaflowne moive and the Utena movie.

Ie, completely fucked up and totally confusing. So at least it's in good company? And 8 out of the nine cyborgs act like themselves, which is at least good. Jet is...erm...well...it's like they forgot he had character evolution over the course of all of his histories, but he's not necessicarily not himself. Save for the nose.
