Google doesn't think "Corwin" is a name. Drives me mad. D:

My last name apparently should be spelled "Charlatan." It's not.

Why don't you add it to the dictionary?

You can't add grammar things to the dictionary, only words. Which is fucking annoying.

I had a friend named Marianne, and when she entered her name into my phone contacts, it autocorrected it to 'Marine Mares' without her noticing. I was really confused when I got my first text from her.

I wrote the contraction "aren't" and it told me to change it to "aren't." So you see my dilemma?

That's not the spell checker, that's the grammar checker, which is so very frequently wrong in such creative ways that you are far better turning the damn thing off.

I don't remember what the context was, but Word kept trying to get me to change a perfectly correct bit of grammar to an incorrect one. To make it shut up, I changed it to what it suggested, only to have it suggest I change it to the original. I did, and it wanted to go back to the other one.

I've had this problem before.

This thread makes me sad my TextEdit* spellcheck broke some time ago. However, I know it did shit like this, I just can't remember specifics.

Oh, hey. It's not just me, then. Any tips on how to fix it, aside from drastic factory-restore type stuff? I mean, my spelling's not awful or anything, but I make enough mistakes that I always catch a couple after I've turned in an assignment or whatever.

Nope, sorry. I haven't managed to fix mine yet either, and I always catch typoes on my stuff later...

In the version of Open Office I have right now, it recognizes Gilgamesh, Enkidu, Dumbledore, and Voldemort... but not Aslan, Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, or the a whole swath of more prominent figures from ancient mythology. Like, you know. Morgana. (Also missing are possessives for most names, some fairly normal vocabulary words, and pretty much all place-names, real and fictional.)

I also had a version from awhile back that insisted I correct facade to façade, and then told me the latter was wrong but had no spelling suggestions.

Thing with OpenOffice though, is you can ADD those missing names. And the grammar check in OO does NOT have the end result of anything you write ultimately coming across like it's being read by Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man.

For some reason, "So" is a word, but "So." - as a full sentence, with a full stop? Isn't. It's not even the grammar checker that protests, it's the spell check. I... don't get it.

Word recently tried to correct "Yeeeeeah" into either "Eyeteeth" or "Eyebeam." I don't even.

I also have a constant battle with Word's grammar checker because it hates dialogue. Even on its laxest setting, it bitches at me for the stupidest things. The only reason I've been running the check recently is because it gives me some stats at the end that I've been keeping track of for a parody I'm writing.

Not a suggestion, but OpenOffice recognises taxonomy and yet not taxa or taxon... what do you think taxonomy INVOLVES, OO?
