That episode was one of the biggest pieces of crap ever produced for television. It has nothing to do with making excuses.
I think, generally speaking, Moffat is good at setting up complicated story lines but doesn't really deliver on the resolution. River is just one aspect of that. The cracks, the Pandorica, the Silence, the Doctor's 'death', and the Clara mystery fall in the same category, imo.
