"Moffat is so perfect!"

(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
...according to my sister, that is. Secret 9 has reminded me of this, so here's a thing:

My sister watched Doctor Who, loved it, watched Sherlock as well, loved it, and is pretty enthusiastic about how much she likes Moffat and the stuff he makes. I'm only a casual watcher of DW, and have never seen Sherlock, so I'm reeeeeeally not up to speed on Moffat and everything he's done, but I'm rather vaguely aware that he does some problematic stuff. Is it bad that my sister is fanning over him? She's pretty young, just a teenager, so she'll probably grow out of it or whatever, but is it bad enough that I should say something? Point out things that are wrong with the shows and hope she listens? I'm pretty ignorant wrt how severe Moffat's issues are, so I'm not really sure whether it's worth bringing up or what I would say if I did.

Tl;dr my sister likes Steven Moffat, should I say something about it?

If you don't know why people have issues with Moffat I'd leave your sister alone about it. Not your issue.

Don't be a buzzkill, just let her watch and love her shows in peace. Moffat's loudest critics make everything sound worse than it is. Yes, his work has some problems, but it's nowhere near the worst stuff on television.

It's precisely because his writing is generally better than others that we hold him to a higher standard. He's talented in so many ways that his failures in writing female characters is especially glaring. You hope for more from that kind of a writer.

Let her have her fun. Not caring about "problematic" things isn't something she has to grow out of. What matters to you doesn't have to matter to her now or ever. He's a creative talent responsible for far more than DW and Sherlock and people only complain about him now when those shows don't depict what they want in the way they want. No one ever complained about him before or outside his work with DW and Sherlock.

Nah, it's fine. It's not going to hurt her or anything. The problems are mainly just that it tends to affect the enjoyment of the show for people who do see the problems. It's not some ~dangerous insidious indoctrination~ or something.

Although I guess, if you watch the show with her, it wouldn't hurt to be open to discussing the problems with her if *she* is the one who brings them up.

Don't bring anything up: If you guys are anything like me & my siblings, Sibling A bringing stuff up in that manner makes Sibling B more likely to reject the arguments of Sibling A, because it can seem like Sibling A is mocking what Sibling B likes, and by extension, Sibling B. If she brings it up herself, though, talk to her about it, but don't push her. For all you know, she knows about the problematic stuff other people see, but still really likes Moffat/is a fan because she doesn't see it/doesn't agree and that's okay.

no, just let her enjoy it :/ It's not problematic in the slightest for her to squee over things, even if Moffat dude wrote it.
