Mother 3 is my favorite of the three, but I understand what you're talking about, OP. I tend to enjoy media that's emotional (Up is my favorite movie, for one), and Mother 3 is quite different from the other two games in the series. Earthbound is known for its quirky humor, and while Mother 3 has some of it, it's much more of a tearjerker than Earthbound is. People that go into the game thinking it'll be funny and silly tend to be disappointed.

I still love Earthbound, but I'll admit I've never tried playing Mother. I don't like games with a ton of random encounters and a lot of grinding, so I just haven't been too interested in giving it a try. Maybe one of these days I will. I love the soundtrack and know all of the vocal songs by heart, so that's one good reason I should try playing it.

i think there is a patch that duplicates the experience and money you receive, and reduces the number of random encounters, if you'd like to give that a shot
