To answer your question, the books make me laugh out loud. I totally dig the dark humor and the outrageous narration. When I was a kid, I didn't like reading the nice books, I liked reading Roald Dahl and Goosebumps and Lemony Snicket. These books, as well as teaching me a lot of vocabulary, were very entertaining.

I might despise the conclusion of it, (I don't think Handler planned things out very well,) but to me, it was a creepy bunch of books that made me laugh and taught me things. Also I always liked books which had villains that were real people over unstoppable supernatural beings. Olaf was a bad guy who seemed like he'd exist in real life, which made him even scarier.

In short, I understand why people wouldn't like the books (repetitive, confusing near the end, explaining a lot of the plot rather then showing it,) but the macabre nature of the books made me love them.
