(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 05:35 am (UTC)(link)You may have been reading some other comicbooks?
(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 01:14 am (UTC)(link)Clint has been around forever in comics, but the emphasis in his case has never been the circus stuff (and uneducated? Well, compared to Dr Banner, yes, but no more so than any other character in Marvel, really).
The emphasis for his character has always been:
1) he is former villain - one of the very few good guys who is a reformed bad guy
2) also a real lady killer, even more so than Tony Stark (the number of his girl friends is unbelievable), nearly as many as Daredevil! Tends to hit on every woman he meets, regardless of their reaction/availability.
The main difference with Matt Murdock is that most of his former exes are still alive and not friends anymore: the man is full of qualities (well, he is very good with arrows for instance), but he is a macho pig and more of a bad memory for his exes, apparently.
3) a smart mouth with an edge, with nastier and more offensive banter than Spiderman, and as a result not really liked by his teammates and other allies (point 2 doesn't help either). Has a major inferiority complex when it comes to Captain America with whom he often disagrees, mostly as a way to rebel against authority/the man.
4) has never been a SHIELD agent and based on his abilities and his costume, not likely to ever become part of SHIELD, though he gave a hand to the Secret Avengers for a while and has been known to disguise himself. Does it get more noticeable than wearing a purple skirt, really? Any excuse to use someone else's costume is totally understandable *coughRonincough*
Coulson on the other hand hardly exists in the comics except in a few cameos as a SHIELD agent. As you said, he has practically no background. Not like say, Jasper Sitwell or even Maria Hill who have been in the SHIELD background with some significant roles in the past.
Side note: in the movie 'The Avengers' they have zero interaction that I saw? I don't think they even speak to each other or are ever in the same room, even. As a basis for a pairing, it seems a bit weak to me.
I get that their pairing is the third most popular since the Avengers movie, but I pretend to understand why: not that I care really, even though I quite like Hawkeye's character both in the comics and the movie, but strictly based on the movie, I'd say Hawkeye could most reasonably be paired with the Black Widow with whom he has the most interaction. Or maybe Loki if one really wants to slash him. He is not very slashable, actually.
Based on the comics, he could reasonably be paired with any of his exes -we are spoiled for choice- or his wife, even (Mockingbird). Why not. Heh.
Maybe Cap, if one absolutely needs slash of a very unhealthy type (since Captain America is a sort of father figure to Hawkeye as mentioned above: it's who Hawkeye would like to be and the person he respects the most, this is clearly established over the years - in the Marvel comics).
Or for slash fans who don't mind incest, his (unreformed) brother Barney? Or maybe even The Swordsman (former mentor back from his villain days)?
But Coulson? Er. OK. But that really is based on Hollywood rumors of a forthcoming TV show starring the Coulson character, not on the movie and even less on the comics background, IMHO...
