Good point

I admit that this is also the biggest issue I have with AO3: this is in danger of invalidating the whole point of the archive. Lately I've been reading a lot there and the complete lack of regulation means that tags are becoming useless.

Seriously, search on Lestrade/Sherlock and you get different results from Sherlock Holmes/Inspector Lestrade. Why? Why should I get a different number of fics resulting from tag searches that should be exactly equivalent (we are not discussing other Holmes characters also named Sherlock or Lestrade in AUs where he is not an inspector, BTW), so what is the reason?

Answer: tag wranglers are only human and can only do so much when authors spend more time and creativity on their tags then on their fics. Some of them anyway.

Added to that the fact that the date fields have become unreliable as a search method (more and more fics show or do not show when they should when searching on dates updated) and in large fandoms (like the Avengers) where dozens of fics are produced each day, it's become useless to search for new material on AO3... even if following a very small pairing with very few fics like in the example given above.

Another example showing how tags are failing: look at the All Fandoms page where each media should show the top five fandoms. In the Movies box, we get:

Marvel (45160)
The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom (26240)
The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types (25204)
DCU (20186)
Homestuck (17950)

Note how the top three are really 'Marvel - all media' ( or possibly 'The Avengers') but they get three slots because even tags used from fandom are out of control... It's true it's not AO3's fault, but they should bite the bullet and tell our young tumblr friends to mind their p and qs.
