(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)But what about them makes you enthusiastic? This is a serious question, I am not being sarcastic, I am trying to understand because I am an old-timer... Note that I love funny tags on tumblr and find them useful in delicious or LJ, it's only in AO3 that I don't appreciate them, so I'd love to hear what I am missing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)What we're doing as wranglers is facilitating (as best we can with the guidelines which are of course not going to be perfect ever which is why we keep tweaking at them) the use of browsing and making fic findable, and that's the primary use we deal with, obviously, but it's not the only point to tagging.
Sometimes one of the wacky tags that as a wrangler we'll take one or two looks at and then pretty much ignore for the rest of their existence will sometimes actually be a draw to decide what someone wants to read or not (I know that on occasion, I've been drawn to read a fic that I wouldn't have read otherwise by a particularly interestingly strange tag that wouldn't have been appropriate for a summary or I wouldn't have seen in an author note. Or been turned off of a fic in the same way. And I think everyone's going to draw the line on what helps them in that manner in a different spot.
Even those massive chunks of rambly tumblr-y tags that make most people enthusiastically slam their heads on a wall offer some sense of what you might be getting from a fic just in their existence. I saw someone comment once that that helps them decide straight up that they might want to give it a pass whereas if they clicked in and saw the same screed in an author note, they'd have to bother to hit the back button.
So really, I think even the tags that make me go REALLY? can be useful, it's just that their uses are different than what we normally consider useful. And what I've been doing by wrangling is basically make sure the tags fulfill their different kinds of usefulness, even if that's just by leaving them alone.
... I hope I managed to make that at all understandable.
