Suggestions for fics wanted
(Anonymous) 2013-06-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)I’m writing a thesis about slash fanfiction, and I’d love suggestions for specific fics I can use as examples of various tropes etc. Rather than just go through my own favorites, I’m curious to see what other fans might suggest.
I’m looking for fics that fit one (or more!) of these criteria:
• Hurt/comfort. Especially fics you would consider classics in some way in your fandom, but any h/c you think worth a mention is appreciated.
• Fics with lots of intertextuality. Either in the form of references to modern or classical literary works, or in the form of meta on any level (including fics that explicitly reference other fics)
• Fics with clichés/tropes typical of slash fanfiction (both the obvious and the perhaps less obvious – feel free to tell me why you think they’re typical of slash, if you want to :) ).
• Slash fics that use the conventions of the romance genre.
For the sake of convenience, I would love it if you could give me fics from any of the following fandoms (since I know them pretty well):
• Harry Potter
• Supernatural
• Inception
• Criminal Minds
• Marvel/Avengers (cinematic universe, although I have nothing against dipping a toe into comics!universe)
• White Collar
• BBC Sherlock
• Teen Wolf
• Castle
• Skyfall
• The Hobbit
• Hawai’i Five-O
I’m also reasonably familiar with the following and feel comfortable enough reading them:
• Star Trek (in any filmed incarnation – although if someone has classic Kirk/Spock fic they want to recommend, I will be especially thrilled to read it)
• The Lord of the Rings (mostly the cinematic universe, but I know the books as well)
• Buffy
• Hannibal
• Sherlock Holmes in other incarnations than the BBC version
• Queer as Folk (US)
• Game of Thrones (TV series)
• The Hunger Games (either version)
• Once Upon a Time
• X-Men (cinematic universe)
• Die Hard IV
• Disney
• X-Files
However, if there’s something you want to recommend from another fandom than the ones I’ve mentioned, I’d still love to hear it!(As you can see from the list I am only familiar with Western fandoms, and mainly TV/movies, so although I’m sure there’s tons of inspiring material in e.g. anime fandoms, I’ve decided to stick with what I know).
I’m not fussy about pairings, so anything goes on that front (I tend to read big pairings, but anything you want to rec is fine). All ratings are fine, pre-slash is fine, crossovers are fine, het background or side pairings are fine – all I ask is that the romance focus is on a slash pairing, and that it is available online. As for length, I’d prefer anything with a wordcount between 1.000 and 50.000, but if there’s something outside those parameters you absolutely want to rec, there’s no harm in recommending :)

As much as I like Kirk/Spock, I almost ship Chekov/Sulu more. I'm not even sure why, I'm just very fond of the ship. This is one of my favorite fics in that ship, starting out when Chekov and Sulu are saddled as roommates at the Academy. Really like this fic a lot.
Is femslash ok, or are you mostly looking for male/male slash? If femslash works, Once Upon a Time's a pretty good fandom for exploring femslash stuff for your thesis.(mostly since there are so many female characters on the show!) I particularly like Aurora/Mulan.

I wrote about Jpop for my big thesis, but I wrote a 15-page paper about participatory fan culture recently as well for my big end-of-college capstone course. If you want any recommendations feel free to PM me.
(if you haven't read Henry Jenkins' article "Quentin Tarantino's Star Wars," for example, that's definitely one of the first things I'd try. I really like Henry Jenkins in general, for his writings on fandom).

Intertextuality Recs for BBC Sherlock:
breathedout does some excellent work with intertextuality regarding historical queerness. I recommend "How the Mouth Changes its Shape" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/704773/chapters/1300211)(though this is femmeslash) and, possibly more relevant to your project, her "Unreal Cities" verse which includes "The Violet Hour" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/384405/chapters/629311?view_adult=true) and "Ein Zimmer Mit Bad" (http://archiveofourown.org/works/487592) as the stories you would want to focus your attention on.
falling_voices also did an intertextual-of-sorts story for BBC Sherlock called "The Theory of Narrative Causality"(http://falling-voices.livejournal.com/18100.html). It's the BBC Sherlock characters in the ACD Holmes fandom and it is delightful.

5U175 by Closer – Suits - Mike/Harvey – Summary: Harvey sometimes moonlights as a Star Trek BNF. Mike might have an attitude problem on the internet. TiberiusGhost is strangely compelling, for a recluse who never goes to meetups, and Harvey's finding this kid Photohead vaguely familiar...
(I’m not int he Suits fandom… at all, I haven’t seen even a single episode of the show, but this fic is… good.)

And now for something completely different...I don't know if you've ever watched The Office (US), but I would recommend this Ryan/Jim H/C fic because it's so well-written and descriptive that you don't even really have needed to watch the show to like it. It's a post-apocalypse fic (no zombies) and tells the story of how two people who never really saw eye-to-eye ended up having to work together when tragedy strikes. The fic is ~20,000 words.
