I think works that manipulate their audiences to feel sad are pretty shallow.

not necessarily. works "manipulate" us to feel a variety of things, that is the point of consuming stuff that isn't non-fiction. sadness/angst is often easiest to sloppily insert, but it's not inherently shallow.

I would say even non-fiction writers manipulate us to feel (or to think) certain things. Their work wouldn't be interesting otherwise.

Sure. But what's the real difference between a work that "manipulates" you to feel sad and one that just makes you "feel" sad? It's that the former is clumsy, while the latter is skillful. You're actually being manipulated either way. And if you weren't, then you wouldn't read or watch, because it wouldn't create any sense of involvement.
