Silly opinions you had when you were a teenager

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret #11 (the "military sux!!11" one). This seems to me like a well-meaning but hilariously naive and silly teenage reaction, so....anyone want to share opinions like that which you eventually grew out of?

No. That's not a "naive and silly teenage reaction," that's a differing opinion.

Personally, when I was a "naive and silly teenager" I supported the Iraq war, George Bush, and the military because I thought that surely if the military/government was doing it it must be right. It was only when I got past being a silly teenager that I realized it was bullshit.

Your opinions are not restricted to either that or thinking "all military organizations, even fictional ones that are proven to be good, are automatically bad". There's a pretty big range of opinions in between.

One of my friends wrote her final government paper in 2003 on how it would be a good idea to invade Iraq because it was important that we keep the prices of oil in America down. Years later, she told me about it and we laughed at how naive she was.

Well, at least she was honest, I guess.

No, it's fucking stupid and immature to think that all military action is bad and the military is always wrong. Sorry, but it is.

That doesn't justify all military action or mean that the military is in general good, but to say it's always bad is pretty much just dumb.

No, it's not. Just because someone disagrees with you does not make them stupid and immature.

I agree with that.

But unless you have a really solid plan for "It's the year 1939 and this is what we, as countries in the world, should do about Hitler" that doesn't involve military action at all, saying that military action is always wrong is just fucking stupid

What if I didn't grow out of it, and I still think the military sucks?

Yeah, this.

I used to be pretty homophobic. Then I found out one of my favourite singers was gay, and I started slowly getting over it. And now it's all good.

As long as your favorite singer wasn't Clay Aiken, cause then you still have problems.

I decided I was never going to learn to drive and thereby single-handedly save the environment.

Now I'm 21 and finally learning because somehow my refusal to drive didn't stop the gears of the industrial world and not knowing how to drive just makes me a burden on everyone around me when I constantly need to be driven places.

I maintain that I'm not going to own a car, but that's a little more realistic what with rentals and autoshare programs (plus how would I afford anyway)

I believed that the Enneagram personality categorization tool could be used to describe all people accurately. Me and another friend of mine (both of us were having struggles dealing with people and life due to being mentally ill and outcasts, don't judge me too harshly), we would sort every person we met into a category to figure out how to deal with them best.

Recently I reread the Enneagram descriptions and they are not at all like I remembered, I can't believe I fell so hard for that crap

"Are bisexuals really open-minded or just really desperate?"

/slaps 14-year-old self

I also used to think the US was awesome, Planned Parenthood encouraged "slutty" behavior, and the theory of evolution was just part of the secular war on religion. Amazing what you can believe when you're not presented with the actual facts of the matter.

"You don't care about or even understand politics, but maybe you'll sound cool and smart if you fake it!"

Yeah. I maybe managed that for a year or two, max.

A decade later, and I still don't care about/understand politics, but I haven't felt obligated to try.

Oh maaaaan, I was an outright fundy (because my parents were) when I was a teenager. Gays are sinful!!, atheists only want to be their own gods and can't make moral decisions!!, abortion is murder!!, the whole works.

And theeeeeen I grew up and started to meet people who knew more about the real world than my parents.
