The point of the comment is if other people can see it as "Harry Potter fan", why can't OP? Why are so many commenters jumping to racism over a fictional tattoo? You're entitled to your opinion, but people are acting like it's some universal fact that "OMG! How horrible!" The above comment points out that is not simply the only case.

I don't know that anyone's calling the ex-bf racist, per se, so much as saying that it's in incredibly bad taste to have that specific tattoo and that he either: a) knows what the tattoo is associated with in canon and doesn't care that he's branding himself with the mark of a group of genocidal racists; or b) didn't think about the implications and is just maybe a bit dull.

There aren't a lot of symbols to take away from HP though. Tattoo options are limited. You can have a lightning bolt, or a golden snitch perhaps, or a dark mark. That's pretty much it for people who really want a fandom tattoo.

... or the deathly hallows symbol, the stars from Grandpre's chapter illustrations, a quote, one of the house symbols, or a time turner-- all of which I've seen. Tattoo whatever you want on your body, but let's not pretend there are absolutely no other tattoos you could get to display your love of Harry Potter other than the symbol associated with a racist/genocidal group.

Because the OP is a Harry Potter fan who knows what the symbol means in the books/movies. The OP knows it's the symbol for a group of racist terrorists.

It's fine if Average Joe on the street doesn't know that and just thinks "Oh! A Harry Potter fan!". Average Joe doesn't have to live with the guy. OP did, until she decided not to.
