(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)I just love how Four is (like Ten) forever laughing at the darkness.

This is a wonderful descriptor! And I was always interested in comparing Four and Ten. In some ways they're complete opposites and in some ways they're so similar and some bits of their stories reflect each other so well and putting them both into one guy's personality at those particular different points in his life is so satisfying.
If it helps, I found Five more interesting in retrospect than I did while I was going through his episodes the first time around. Slogging through his serials is a bit dull because a lot (though not all) of them are similar and IMO kind of boring without much humor and Five doesn't quite have the kind of really strong personality that most incarnations have (which is unique and I find his placement between Four and Six very thought-provoking), but when you put his entire run together and think about it, it's pretty amazing.
Of course, I have the distinct feeling it wasn't actually planned that way beforehand by the writers, but nonetheless, I find it fascinating. The sheer horrifyingness of how goddamn depressing all the pointless war, mass death, decay, age, the heroes being forced to kill, and other bleak nihilistic shit that happened in almost every one of his serials was, when it all came one after another. And Adric dying. And the way and reason that Tegan left. And fucking Warriors of the Deep. And how Five very slowly, very quietly, very politely, kind of just...disintegrates under the stress until he has almost no life in him. And by the last couple serials, after Tegan left, he's just...eerie. And then he turned into Six (who is the most underrated character EVER) and all the implications of that.
But yeah, otoh, that whole era is one of those things that sounds more interesting when you're discussing it afterwards. Talking about it is a lot more interesting than watching it. Assuming anyone cares to listen to me ramble about my overly-detailed impressions...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 04:39 am (UTC)(link)I love humour in my Doctors (which is partly why I adore Eleventy so much) and while I found the reduced humour in the Five era compared with the Four era disheartening, I enjoyed seeing Five's character change over time. Also I loved his faux-polite snippiness towards those who annoyed him. And his face when Tegan came back onto the TARDIS. Hee.
On a completely shallow note, his haircut annoyed for almost his entire reign. The first time I realised (to my surprise) why fandom found him attractive was in 'Planet of Fire' (lovingly renamed in some circles as 'Planet of the Shorts') when he finally cut it.
Tl;dr: I love this whole thread! Whee, classic love!

And the 4-5-6 progression...I dunno how intentional it was, but it's a bit like the Doctor was tired of being so weird and different from everyone else and wanted to be more of a normal guy, but it sort of failed all over place and made him miserable, so he became really OTT aggressive and overconfident and insensitive to compensate the next time around...or something. I'd love to know more about how random or non-random regeneration changes are supposed to be in-universe.
Hee, I liked the haircut because Peter Davison was so normal-looking otherwise. All the other incarnations look kind of weird in some way, even the hot ones.
