What I can't stand is people taking my fanart and turning into their freaking OCs.

People "cast" celebrities as their OCs all the time, why does them doing the same with your art particularly bother you? I'm assuming that they aren't claiming that they created or commissioned the art specifically to portray their OCs.

Um, because they ruin the art with a shitty color over in MS paint and then go and claim they drew it? Yeah. No. Did that a lot, didn't you?

Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it?

I'm assuming that they aren't claiming that they created [...] the art specifically to portray their OCs.

"Claim they drew it" is definitely covered by the above caveat. Since "ruining the art in MS paint" nearly always includes claiming ownership, I feel it's sufficiently implied.

You don't see the difference between someone saying "My OC looks like this actor/actress!" and someone taking a drawing I've put some work in to get to look like the character I was trying to to draw(Because I'll admit right now, I love drawing, but I'm nothing spectacular especially when it comes to fan art.) Then either take the line art, trace it, or do a lazy paint over job, and post a picture of their cute little OC who just happens to look exactly like another character from the same series with a palate swap.

It happens to me surprisingly often, I get really fucking sick of it.

As I said to the nonny above you, I stated "assuming that they aren't claiming that they created [...] the art" in my question. I figured that implies that they aren't tampering with the art, either, just because I've never seen anyone alter artwork without claiming ownership of it.

Maybe a concrete example would help:

The one time I "cast" an OC to someone's art, it was in the vein of "he's a lot like (character X), except more like (artist Y) portrayed here."

So. Eliminating the issues of stealing credit and defacing the source work, why is that a problem?

I've never seen anyone alter artwork without claiming ownership of it.

They ARE altering my fanart, and reposting it as their OC. That is the problem.
No they don't all claim they drew it, some have, but some people even linked back the the original art.

When I put the time and effort in making fanart, and end up with something I'm happy enough with to post, someone taking that, and altering it into their OC, and re-posting it is a fucking kick in the gut to me. Why should I sit back and let people do that just because it's fanart?

Ok, so I was wrong and my original question wasn't clear.

Out of curiosity I'd still like an artist's opinion on someone casting your art without modification or misattribution as their OC. Is that still horrible? Or is it the alteration and/or theft (neither of which happened in my example) that's the problem?

It's the alterations, and theft I have the problem with.
