I'm side-eyeing you a bit due to your emphasis on the term "lawful," as though the fact that something is deemed legal removes any possible question as to whether it's moral or justifiable. (Hint: it doesn't.)

The sad fact is that there are some laws which absolutely should not have been passed, some people who absolutely should not have made it into positions of authority, and some orders which are morally reprehensible irrespective of their legality and absolutely should not be obeyed. If you believe otherwise, sorry to tell you, but you ARE brainwashed.

Lawful orders is a military term meaning orders given by a non-commissioned officer that do not violate branch regulations or federal laws governing the military. It's common lexicon in most militaries dating back to the 19th century. News media, entertainments, and civilians usually just call them orders. Orders are actually something entirely different.
