(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 06:15 am (UTC)(link)Fans of the shows, sure. Fans of 'Sherlock Holmes' when the shows/films are really not very much like the source material? Actually, no. If it's elitist to point that out, then I am and I don't care. It has nothing to do with "length of time" one has been in a fandom. It has everything to do with derivations being so far from the original they have pretty much just pinched the idea or the names and run with it - which they can do, sure but you might as well say that a fan of The Lion King is a Shakespeare enthusiast. Exaggeration for effect.
Fan handwaving and "ooh, anyone who disagrees something is canon is an elitist" frustrates me to no end.
