I don't like this trope. I also don't like the "soldiers are heroes by virtue of enlisting" trope unless it's very closely linked to "and so are all others who are risking life and limb or peace of mind to make your life livable".

Joining the military is taking on a job. You may wind up having an overall positive or negative impact on the world while doing that job, which unfortunately often mostly depends on who is running your military - although in some cases, with great initative, individuals have bucked the trend. Those, without fail, deserve thanks or contempt, depending on the direction they bucked the trend in.
