It's being proud of where you live.

It's not very different from being proud of where you were born, but it is still a very strange thought to proud of something like that.

Perhaps it's because I'm German and showing patriotism for anything other than the soccer world cup is pretty much frowned upon over here (hell, if my neighbour would hang a national flag out of their window tomorrow, I would think twice before inviting them to a party again), but I don't even understand the need for it. Why would you be proud of your nation with all the historical baggage? Why does it even matter?

I understand feeling a bit proud of your local community or government if they did something you approve of (or even better, voted for). But this general feeling of "fuck yeah, I'm xxx-ian" eludes me. Why do some people feel so protective about their patriotism?
