Perhaps it's because I'm German and showing patriotism for anything other than the soccer world cup is pretty much frowned upon over here (hell, if my neighbour would hang a national flag out of their window tomorrow, I would think twice before inviting them to a party again), but I don't even understand the need for it. Why would you be proud of your nation with all the historical baggage? Why does it even matter?
I understand feeling a bit proud of your local community or government if they did something you approve of (or even better, voted for). But this general feeling of "fuck yeah, I'm xxx-ian" eludes me. Why do some people feel so protective about their patriotism?
