I don't think this is an unusual opinion. Probably the best thing about vocaloid is that it allows composers to be able to try out unusual/interesting things, or not have to deal with singers, that they can compose on their own. I'm not crazy about her voice either, but my absolute favorite pop music composer (Maeyamada Kenichi, AKA Hyadain) used her vocals early on in his career, for example, and it allows a lot of people more musical freedom.

Because it's a program, Vocaloid tends to be very hit-or-miss as far as songs go. You've got people who can't work all that well with them, not to mention people trying to fit the voice to something it's not really meant to do. (Miku is pretty good for peppy, poppy songs; if you want jazz you're better with Luka and Lily's good at rock. But people try and make Miku do everything and everyone do Miku's songs and just...no.)

Personally I do like Vocaloids, but if you like the songs but not the Vocaloids' voices you can always try fancovers. There are some really talented fans over on Nicovideo's Utattemita section.

Yeah, some of her songs sound a lot off than what you usually hear due to her made-up voice. Sometimes though, her voice ends up making the song actually catchy.

Anyway, different strokes for different folks.

Listen to Nico Nico choruses then. Real people singing vocaloid songs. Results may very depending on the singer(s), but they're generally much better than the straight up vocaloid versions.

Personally, I really only like the vocaloids in creepier songs or songs where they are singing as a robot trying to understand humans and emotion.

It's the whole kawaii/moe thing. Luka sounds a bit deeper.

It also depends on what the composer does, I think. Some Miku songs, especially ones with Append Dark, aren't so screechy, and there are high-pitched cutesy Luka songs.
