After Hannibal Rising, was there really any doubt this would happen with SOME people? I mean, the author was great about the 'freudian excuse' thing for so long... the killers often HAD contributing factors to their behavior, but it typically seemed more to influence the way their evil manifested rather than the reason it existed. So it was there, and interesting, but in no way made them less culpable for their actions. Then the author, who clearly loves Hannibal and who is very aware that he's the driving point of all these novels/movies, decides to write his origin. And through that Hannibal is transformed into someone driven totally by this traumatic event that even explains away his cannibalism. Most of the time it doesn't seem to be treated this way, and I don't think it is at ALL in the show, but when looking at the canon as a whole it doesn't surprise me. It has less to do with the way people treat serial killer characters and more to do with the way the source material treats them. They can either be portrayed as a dysfunctional, evil person who had some bad things happen to them that helped form their identity (but doesn't force them to kill - since it's clear that abuse doesn't CAUSE this), or else they can be set up like complete victims who no longer have control over themselves (even if they are portrayed in the canon as being meticulous, detail-oriented, highly refined people and disciplined people... go figure)

Well to be fair, Harris was more or less strong-armed into writing Hannibal Rising. He never wanted to in the first place.
