(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)The vibe came from the post-Civil War concept, true, but that's because it was a Western, and Westerns are almost always post-Civil War, usually featuring characters that wore the blue or the gray. But the overall setting was that of the technologically inferior underdogs having lost to a more well-armed empire. That is a setting we see all the freaking time.
Was the Civil War primarily about slavery? Hoo boy, yes. Yes it was. But to the individual soldiers on the homestead? Not so much. There were plenty of men (and women. Let's not forget the 400+ women who fought) who genuinely thought they were fighting not for slavery, but for their freedom, because at the time, the "United States" weren't exactly as "United" as all that, and they felt as though a foreign power was dictating what they could and couldn't do. The Confederates, like any other army, even the ones fighting on the Bad Side, were just people.
Which isn't even the point. Because in Firefly, the war had nothing to do with slavery and everything to do with governmental control of colonies. So, y'know, like a couple of other wars in history.
