Ayup. Sadly. I love Firefly for many reasons, but that is so fucked.

I don't know, OP, about your straw fans. I'm a fan, I've even got a signing off him, but I think he fetishises a certain kind of woman which leads to him writing about girly female superheroes he jerks off to. And he's sooooo whitey. Still like a lot of his stuff. I think he's funny and does character interactions well. Adored the Avengers film. It's okay to like problematic stuff if you acknowledge it, and I've talked to many other Whedon fans who acknowledge it.

Yeah, that was weird. Even as a fan of the show, it was pretty apparent Kaylee and the Tams were written to be Chinese, and then for some reason... weren't cast that way.

It was no less problematic with the other PoC than it was with the Chinese.

Agreed, although I'm not entirely sure that, even as a director and writer, you are the only person making decisions when casting people.

Yeah you do. Not as a writer, but the director absolutely. The casting director may put people there for you to see, but it's up to you.
