that he has come right out and said he wrote to fuck with people so that the series can be retired and put to bed.

Prove it. People here love to put words in Harris's mouth about how he hates the character but he's the definition of a recluse and hasn't given in an interview in years.

Well, there's this from the Hannibal Rising wiki page:

The February 22, 2007 issue of Entertainment Weekly features a quote that suggests that the only reason Thomas Harris wrote the story was out of the fear that a Lecter prequel/origin story would inevitably be written without his involvement. Hannibal Rising film producer Dino De Laurentiis said "I say to Thomas, 'If you don't do [the prequel], I will do it with someone else...I don't want to lose this franchise. And the audience wants it...' He said, 'No. I'm sorry.' And I said, 'I will do it with somebody else.' And then he said, 'Let me think about it. I will come up with an idea.'"[2]

Did you read the Hannibal book? His sister being killed was mentioned in it several times through flashbacks, so the point is moot that Hannibal Rising was Harris's attempt to 'ruin' Hannibal's character. Harris didn't want to write the book because he thought it was pointless and the Hannibal book had already explained his past well enough.
