Re: Victim Blaming?

That's not victim-blaming. No, she didn't DESERVE it, but she still had it coming in a causal way. That's like saying it's victim-blaming to say it to someone who got hit by a car because they ran out into the street without looking both ways.

na

but she still had it coming in a causal way

what the hell does that even mean

Re: Victim Blaming?

That's incredibly tactless, insensitive, unnecessary victim blaming in both of those examples. If a friend of mine had either of those things happen to them, things that happened as a result of their carelessness, and someone said "I told you so" to them, I would make sure everyone knew they said that. I would press criminal charges against them for that if I could, which is possible in some places if I witnessed it first hand.

It cannot possibly be against the law to tell someone "I told you so" because they got hit by a car after not looking both ways. Please cite your sources. If a person went to the police station to rat someone out because they told another person "I told you so", the only possible reaction I can foresee happening is that the police would throw you out while laughing themselves to death

DA
New York has victim persecution laws that could fall under. Anyone hit by a car even if it's their fault is considered a victim. Not sure about other places.

nayrt

I tried googling about victim persecution laws but all I found was stuff about the holocaust for some reason. Do you know where I might read about them? It just seems like there would have to be more harassment, threats and/or intent to harm to actually count as victim persecution than just a simple but douchey "I told you so".

Not a great example because the place is full of ridiculous laws, but that's a misdemeanor in NYC. There was a story in the NYT a while back about someone spending like a month in jail for saying that to someone. I'm on my phone and searching their mobile site sucks, but I'll look for a link when I get home and post it if I find it.

lol what. you're both idiots. "I told you so" is a shitty thing to tell someone who just experienced trauma (even if whatever happened really was their fault due to negligence, breaking traffic rules, etc) but it's not worthy of being a criminal fucking offence, you drama queen

Re: Victim Blaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not worthy of it but it is a criminal offense in NYC. I think Bloomberg must be behind it because he comes up with the most random laws.

You mean Mayor Sugar Drinks?

Re: Victim Blaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
You are a terrible person.

da

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
you are comparing rapists to hapless drivers who can't slow down immediately if someone jumps out in front of them

i'm no sjw, but there are some implications there you may wanna think about

Re: Victim Blaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not only is that victim blaming, but "she had it coming" is textbook victim blaming. Please don't try and clear this confusion up for people until you actually know what you're talking about and what "victim-blaming" means.

Re: Victim Blaming?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"that's not victim-blaming" "she had it coming"

Yeah, I don't think you understand what victim blaming is.

what fuckery is this

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody has rape coming. Nobody deserves it. If you blame a person for being raped, which is what you are doing, then you are victim blaming. They are the victim, you are blaming them for being the victim. You are victim blaming. Rapists are the ones that have 100% of the blame.

SA here to apologise.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
What I said was uncalled for. My intent was that I feel it's extremely important to take precautions, because the sad truth is, some people ARE just scum who will take advantage - but worded it much too strongly and tried to use a phrase that meant differently than I'd thought. I'm sorry for what I said and I certainly didn't mean to come off as I did.

Re: SA here to apologise.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
The person in the sub-thread currently at the bottom is saying the same thing in the way I should have (without being stupid and an ass about it) if I'm not quite clear.

Re: SA here to apologise.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's good that you're apologizing, as that seems to be rare on the internet for some reason and I'm glad you realize why your comment was offensive.

Wow, this is pretty awesome and I understand how sometimes we say somethings we don't mean, so good on you for realizing that and owning up to it.

It's definitely a sticky topic and it can be really easy to confuse the idea that it's really important to be safe with the idea that it's the victim's fault if they don't take precautions.
