Well, it's not really a trope I like in general, but this reminds me of one time I was watching MLP, and there's this episode where Twilight is freaking out because she hasn't learned anything new about friendship, and her friends think it's funny and laugh her off. Then at the end of the episode they feel bad and say something like "we thought you were being funny, but we should have realized that you were legitimately upset and taken you seriously." And it just perfectly paralleled a thing that had just happened to me, and I spent half an hour sobbing heartbrokenly because I wished I had friends that would say something like that to me. I never expected a cartoon about multicolored talking ponies to hit so close to home.
