I'm not able to keep up with popular music at all.

Neither am I. I follow the Japanese charts for my favorite groups, but I know nothing about popular music. I'll ride in the car with friends and they'll have the radio on and they're always shocked I don't know the popular song that they're singing along to or whatever.

Same. I'm more comfortable on my motorbike than in the car so I rarely listen to the radio and I don't watch TV anyway. I'm so behind the times. But I only listen to classic rock these days anyway

Not related to the secret, but is the art in your icon Harry Potter-related? It looks like a color version of the art found at the start of every chapter.

He does look like Harry, doesn't he? The artist and the creator of the character get a lot of questions along those lines. But no, the person in my icon is te wizard Ponder Stibbons from Discworld, and he was created quite some time before Harry Potter.

Me too. Gave up trying years ago.

Same. More than half the songs on my IPhone are video game music because of me not switching the car radio on.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I mostly just go out searching for music myself on the internet, or word-of-mouth from friends. Every so often, I'll discover a good top 40 song, but generally it just passes me by.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I can only "keep up" with it because I'm too lazy to set music I like for the alarm and just leave it on a top 40 radio station. It's amazing how many songs you end up hearing after only listening to the radio 15 minutes every morning.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Also in my home country almost all popular hits are published two or three months later than in the USA. Through Glee I always can say... yes I already know this song. It is old. *g*

[picture of a poster from the show Glee]

Even when I enjoy the original covers more, I always listen to the Glee cover instead just because it's LOUDER and thus easier to rock out to.

I also am only able to keep up with popular music by hearing it on Glee first. whoops /o\

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much. Between youtube and iTunes I stopped listening to the radio, and I don't think MTV actually has music videos anymore, so... Glee's pretty much it. Maybe that's one of the reasons people like the show so much.

I know about 'popular' music (and for all i know it's not actually popular) when my daughter dj's music in the car from her phone.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
BECAUSE MUSIC AUTOMATICALLY BECOMES MORE AWESOME WHEN ITS LOUDER! EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD JUST TURN THE VOLUME UP ON THE ORIGINAL RATHER THAN LISTENING TO THE OVERPRODUCED SHITTY MESS THAT NINETY PERCENT OF MODERN MUSIC AND 98% OF GLEE ENDS UP BEING?

Go read Imperfect Sound Forever. Please.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
You sound angry. Are you okay?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm good. But thanks for asking! :-)

(The comparison usually used for overproduced overloud music is that of a paragraph of text in all one sentence entirely in capitals - that kind of unpleasantness. The text size may not be big enough to get that across here.)

There's something about Glee covers that make the popular, overexposed songs more tolerable. I actually like "Love You Like A Love Song" because of Naya Rivera's voice though I think that the metaphor is quite inane.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's louder because the recording has been mixed to be that way. A lot of modern music is "brickwalled", which means that the volume of the tracks has been brought up to the point where the quietest parts of the song are at maximum volume before distortion sets in. The rest of the (louder, now distorted) dynamics are then compressed to bring them back to that peak.

It makes the song more easily heard in areas where there is a lot of ambient noise, and it's also intended to give the song a fuller sound, but it can cause listener fatigue and eliminates any dynamic changes throughout the piece.

Brickwalling is really just ungraceful mastering in the name of loudness. Radio stations have their own compressors anyway, so volume consistency between songs isn't an issue there like people think it is. I'd much rather have albums properly mastered and have the listener adjust the volume to their liking than have no choice but to have their ears blown out.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Everybody who cares about music should care about this.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 01:44 am (UTC)(link)

I mainly like Glee´s covers if my favorite characters (Kurt and Blaine) are singing. But also some of their versions are great, like Scubs with all the guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
This secret annoys me for a couple of reasons.

1. Don't feel bad about not keeping up with "popular music." Whatever makes it to the radio tends to be really overrated by the time it gets there. As long as you're listening to music you enjoy, you shouldn't feel bad about it.
2. Why not just turn up the volume on the original? I'm seriously baffled, especially since I'd hypothetically rather listen to the version I like at a quiet volume than the version I don't at any volume.
3. There is no such thing as an "original cover," jfc. A cover is when somebody does their version of somebody else's song. The original can't be a cover, it's the original!

Okay, petty rant over. /lurks back into corner

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why not just turn up the volume on the original?

Originals are quieter, there are max volumes. It'll always feel like newer songs have more "oomph" since everything's turned way up. Look at the comments above for a better explanation.

[personal profile] juujuubee 2013-06-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of those Glee covers are horribly catchy though! It makes sense?

And I don't even try to keep up with popular music anymore. If I hear something I like then yay. Otherwise, my popular music listening stopped in 2001 which is a little sad.
