[Phantom of the Opera 2004]

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
How the hell is smoking sexy? And why would it go against everything the character does?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, don't ask that. You won't believe how many people will show up and insist smoking is sexy.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet they'd find lung cancer and emphysema super-sexy!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, for goodness' sake. It's the sucking on a cylindrical object that is sexy.

Yrs, a non-hysterical lifelong non-smoker.

Nope, I learned my lesson. Some people DO find smoking sexy! Considering some of the other things some people find sexy, I should probably not have been surprised.

I USUALLY HATE THIS PHRASE, BUT

YKINMK.

I personally think that smoking looks very sexy. Of course many people don't say that. And I'm not saying that acquiring lung cancer is sexy, or that tobacco teeth are sexy. I just think the act of smoking looks sexy.

And there is nothing fucking wrong with that.

^this

I find some ways of smoking, scenes in TV or people smoking in photographs sexy.... but my mum smokes - I can't fucking stand someone smoking!

Different strokes for different people. Visually, I think it's sexy (putting something in your mouth, oral fixation, phallic symbols, sex, SEX, etc). But everything else about it is absolutely unappealing to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Some people legitimately find smoking attractive. What do you mean, "insist" it's sexy? Why do you insist it isn't? Fine, you don't find it sexy, doesn't mean no one does.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
eh, there are times when I've found it sexy but I only like it in fiction just like I enjoy a lot of weird things in fiction that I wouldn't be into irl.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering that the Phantom is obsessed with music and singing, I doubt he'd want to do anything that could possibly damage his voice. Hence why it would go against everything he does.

And some people find smoking sexy. I do myself sometimes. It's one of those things.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, first off, I don't condone smoking. I just think that for a fictional character (particularly THIS version), Erik would be freaking hot smoking. It goes right along with his Victorian evening clothes and the fedora I secretly suspect he wears.

To explain a little better: The Phantom (according to both the book and the musical) is a composer, and the woman he trains to sing (and is creepily in love with) is in the opera. Smoking ruins your lungs, your voice, your taste buds, so I cannot in good conscience see him being okay with lighting one up. It would also ruin HIS voice, which is supposed to be magnificent and amazing and blahcakes, so I can't see him risking it all (and the chance to seduce Christine through song) by taking up cigarettes.

The downside to the 2004 version? Gerard Butler, while very hot, CANNOT sing. And the entire movie is composed from the musical so...you can see why that's an issue.

DA--not to mention that Gerard Butler was, before filming Phantom, a several-pack-a-day smoker, which did not help his lack of vocal training one bit. I've no idea if he started up again post-movie.

(I'm one of the fangirls who headdesked and gave up on the movie somewhere between hearing about the smoking and hearing about Schumacher's fetish for his 'young and sexy' cast, if not earlier, when I realised the director was Mr. Bat-Nipples.) I'm still angry that the Phantom wasn't played by an unknown, Hugh Jackman (although given Les Mis, maybe not) or Will Ferrill, and that Christine wasn't played by Anne Hathaway. (but I can't fault her stated reasons for not taking the role, either.)

The only part of the lead trio I was happy with was poor Patrick Wilson, who I imagine was told to tone his singing down because he made everyone else sound like shit. Hell, I would have been a lot less pissed if they'd dubbed everyone the way they dubbed Minnie Driver.

I thought Anne Hathaway had a scheduling conflict with Princess Diaries 2 (of all things) and couldn't do the role, not that she declined it. What were her reasons?

That version of Erik is my absolute favorite.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
....where's my downvote button

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the version where he's unmasked, and his face is like 25% bruised or something? I remember we laughed, because his face was so not shocking. Probably not what I was supposed to take away from the film.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the version, and that was one of the big problems I had with the film. Erik in the book and musical is seriously, hideously deformed. In the book he actually has no nose, just a nasal cavity, and his face looks skeletal and he's terrifying (and also probably insane).

In the musical its only one side of his face (which happened due to the main actor needing to be able to sing and the full mask hindering that) and its still really gross; like, his skin is falling off and stuff.

Gerard Butler was delicious to look at and...that's not what Phantom is about.

Yes! I just remember thinking back to the 1920s version, and wow, Lon Chaney! They got it so right. I really enjoyed the stage musical, by the way, but somehow, musicals just don't transition well to the screen. But that unmasking just really did it in for me.

Gerard Butler was pretty back then, wasn't he? Can't remember his singing, though.

I always laugh at that part, because you know that those people can't even fucking see his face from that distance and with that light eczema he had going on. So clearly they were screaming because that mask smelled incredibly rank after him wearing it for years and years and years.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I like this interpretation.

While I'm perfectly aware all of fandom hates this version, I think he would be insanely sexy smoking a cigarette.

Even though it'd go against everything his character does.
