Everyone needs a little attention sometimes, and birthdays are one of our culture's more commonly accepted ways of offering it to them. How is it "petty" to be irritated that their family chose to hold the kid's birthday party on OP's actual birthday, and completely not acknowledge OP's birthday? Hold the party on a different day, and let OP have their own birthday, and everybody's happy.

The secret wasn't, "The only time I am ever happy in life is when I'm watching this anime." It was, "My shitty family ruined my birthday and this anime was the only thing able to cheer me up."

"The only time I seem to truly laugh and feel happy is when watching One Piece." This is why I said that. That being the only thing to cheer OP up is one thing; the fact they only seem to be truly happy is watching One Piece.

You also said a bunch of stuff about pettiness related to birthdays, which is what the above comment was calling you out on.

It was, "My shitty family ruined my birthday and this anime was the only thing able to cheer me up."

By the time you're 35, not being the center of attention at a family get-together shouldn't ruin your birthday unless you're a completely self-centered misery maven. TBQH, I suspect the OP's family could have thrown them a party and given them a pony and they'd still find something to piss and moan about.

This isn't about "not being the center of attention at a family get-together." This is about OP's family deciding that their birthday didn't matter. If this was a Memorial Day picnic, or a kid's birthday on the other half of the year from the OP's, you'd have a point. But this was OP's actual birthday, and their family decided that didn't matter. I don't see why you'd assume that the OP would still be unhappy if their family had thrown them a birthday party, since the entire secret was about being pissed that their birthday was ignored.

Did you miss the part where the OP said "the only time I'm happy is when I'm watching One Piece? That's what suggests to me that OP would be complaining no matter what their family did. Sorry, I stand by my point that by the time you're 35, it's not other people's job to make your birthday happy.

It´s not "other people" like the people you work with, or the people from gym . It´s close family.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
agreed

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with you. But I really don't get why birthdays are such a big deal anyway. I don't even celebrate mine, really.

"self-centered misery maven"

Have you ever thought about them having a form of depression?
"You're self-centered" and "you WANT to feel bad" are the first few things my folks told me when I first felt the symptoms of a major depression. Needless to say, I felt like shit because of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, struck me as depression-related too.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus, it's obvious why more attention would be focused on a three year old. It SHOULD be that way, and OP sounds like they need to grow up.
