So I just started watching FMA:B

[personal profile] morieris 2013-06-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...It certainly is a strange world, isn't it. I suppose explanations will come with worldbuilding later on.

Is there a reason there are two different series (I notice that :B's third episode is the original's 1st.)?

/F!S is not your personal journal.

Because it was popular enough to get a remake (which, for some reason, is the new anime trend) and so manga fans could see the end of the manga animated.

The very first series took a dramatically different turn to how the manga actually goes, so they made Brotherhood to follow the original manga.

The first anime was made while the manga was still coming out, and when it overtook it, then two went in radically different directions (I prefer the anime to what I saw of the manga after the divergence, personally). Brotherhood came out after the manga finished, so could follow it to the end.

Hm. I was going to ask which one people preferred better. That's an interesting problem for a story to have. I'll probably watch the first one after I finish.

From what I gather, people tend to like better whatever they encountered first. I watched the first anime (the one that diverges from the manga) and have not yet seen the second or read the manga. I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be most fond of the first one I saw once I watch the rest.

I've also found that people who like the Elrics' relationship (shippy-wise or not) tend to gravitate towards the first series, while those who like the endgame pairings in the manga tend to like Brotherhood more.

Personally, I love the first series and have no plans to watch Brotherhood or read the manga. If for no other reason than I just do not get Ed/Winry. Winry is awesome and I don't understand saddling her with an angry PTSD-riddled misanthrope with a giant brother complex.

Winry is awesome. I came out of the first series shipping Winry/Cheska hard, and from what I understand they don't really even interact in the manga/FMA:B.

I don't ship Ed/Al (mostly because Al reads as so kidlike to me), but I can see why people would. I don't ship Ed/Roy either although I also get that attraction. I do ship Roy/Maes Hughes, but I also think Hughes is awesome with his wife.

What are the endgame ships in the manga out of curiosity? i don't care about being spoiled.

As far as I remember only Ed/Winry. Roy/Riza, Al/May and Ling/Lan were just implied.

The original anime caught up with the manga, and rather than make filler they just kept going and veered off in their own direction. The second FMA anime was put out after the manga completed and was consequently able to be more faithful to the source material.

the first anime was made while the manga was ongoing so was plagued with early filler, then later split off to a different original anime plot/ending.

the second anime was made later so it followed the plot of the manga, and had the opposite problem early on with pacing where they tried to compress the material a lot so they could catch up more quickly to where they had diverged.

people's preferences vary pretty widely.

it didn't really get good for me until around the 10th episode, coincidentally when it stopped overlapping with the original anime

Personally, I like both equally for different reasons. I wanna say FMA anime the first is my favourite but the lines are blurred enough I can't be sure.

I hope you enjoy it. If not, you could always try the older one - and it's movie 'sequel' that I also really enjoyed. I tend to regard it as ...kinda two seperate stories that are AU's of each other after that dividing point. Parallel universes of anime/manga?
