I think I'd be a little miffed too, if my birthday didn't even warrant a mention. I certainly don't want the cakes and the balloons or any of that - just an acknowledgement, "and a happy birthday to you, too, sis" would be enough. If it's totally swept under the rug, I can see that would be offputting.

I'm much more petty in that I don't want to go to a three-year old's birthday at all. Maybe it's just my experience growing up, but we had parties with kids our own age, and aunts and uncles certainly weren't in the mix.

When I was younger, my parents had two parties for me: one for the family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, anyone else familial that was close to us) and then one for our friends.

Maybe it had to do with closeness of family, though, for the family party ended up being mostly my dad's side, because they all live within 15-20 minuets of each other and get together all the time. (My birthday with my mother's side was often mixed in with the closest holiday get together.)

easier to organize and no one gets bored because of the age difference!
