I started watching Teen Wolf this week. I marathoned it all. And, like a complete sheep, I came out of it shipping Sterek. I don't see all this "it's going to be canon omg" stuff that all the other fans seem to like going on about, but yeah. I love me some belligerent sexual tension. So now I have a VERY SERIOUS QUESTION.

Recs? Please? In-Character recs? Preferably long, not AU, and without incredibly tragic/depressing endings? Does IC fic for this fandom even exist, or am I just S.O.L?

I made a very small recs list here. Now disclaimer, I drank the Sterek koolaid for a while there and was reading/enjoying all the shit this fandom was producing. I haven't read these fics in a while so I don't know if they're actually good or if I'm just viewing them through rosecolored glasses.

Hee! You're welcome! There are other fics that I enjoy but. Teen Wolf fandom is so weird. I can enjoy something and also admit that it's not really...in character? idk. But welcome to the fandom! It's infuriating at times and I admit I thought about calling it quits BUT THEN SEASON THREE STARTED. So. \o/

I've been watching all the episodes from the beginning with my mom while she recovers from her knee replacement. She's.....getting pretty sick of it, now, but then every time Derek is onscreen she flips her shit and talks about how ~*pretty*~ he is.

And I'm enjoying some of the fic I'm reading, but most of it....wow. O.O

In-Character is pretty hard to find, but I guess that depends on your interpretation of the characters? But you're in luck with the Sterek because that's pretty much all the fandom produces. Welcome to the madness!

Yes, it does. However, just asking for in-character recs isn't going to do you much good if you don't specify what you consider in-character. Not everyone interprets canon the same way, and your IC is someone's else's irredeemably OOC, and vice versa. (As one example, I've seen various people argue that Stiles is: 1) borderline sociopathic in his disregard for anyone outside his tight circle of family and friends; 2) a criminally reckless and heedless teenager who needs to grow the fuck up before he can be considered a good person; 3) a basically decent kid whose curiosity and stubbornness often get him into trouble and who uses dark humor as a defense mechanism; and 4) an angel of sweetness and light. Personally, I think that the people arguing #1 and #4 aren't watching the same show as I am and that the people arguing #2 have absurdly high standards of behavior for a 16 year old kid thrown into a terrifyingly dangerous and high-stress situation with pretty much no adult support. But that's just my opinion; you might feel very differently.)

Mostly I just think he's a smartass who cares very deeply about his friends while simultaneously managing to say the absolute worst thing in every situation ever.

Which is kind of my favorite character type. Always.

Can I choose All of the Above? Well, not really #4 but I can see a mix of 1-3 all being in-character. Which actually makes sense to me as people aren't just one thing and teenagers in particular can be pretty random since they're really still trying to figure out who they are.

Also you have to account for inconsistent writing, which can lead to vastly different character interpretations because the character behaves in vastly different ways depending on the writer. (This is just a general comment on fanfiction and IC-ness)

Mostly though I was just asking for fic where no one is a delicate swooning flower who cries all the time and always calls their significant other "baby". Because those are the things I cannot read. Ever.

Number 3 is my interpretation and Number 1 seems way more like Scott, to be honest (and I really like Scott, he's just...yeah).

I don't have recs, per se, but I do have some advice for looking for fic on AO3. If you like a character portrayed a certain way TW fandom has a habit of telling you what kind of character interpretation they're doing in the tags. For example, Stiles has the Packmom!Stiles and the BAMF!Stiles tags. Both are different, though sometimes overlapping characterizations. So you can use those to avoid what you don't like and find what you do.
