Agree 100%! I've known people I'm reeeeeaaaaalllly cynical about their special oppressed status, but without evidence I can't in good conscience go around saying that publicly, yanno? Just privately.

Basically. And, I mean, it might be okay to say to a couple of close friends (although still a little dodgy, IMO, if only because it sets a precedent), but saying it on a public forum like this feels like it makes it more acceptable to say that someone else is making it up. Or for someone to say it to themselves. I say this as someone who took years to come to grips with the fact that I was raped, because I was so terrified that a) I was making a fuss over nothing and/or b) other people would think I was. Also as someone who hasn't really come out as genderqueer IRL because I've been called "trenderqueer" so many times online... I think it's throwaway comments like the one above that help to perpetuate that kind of issue, where someone's experiences and identity have to be approved by other people to be considered valid, and that feels hella problematic to me. It seems to me that, even assuming she is lying about being raped, as long as that lie isn't doing anyone any harm it's a lot better than saying that she's lying without proof, which contributes to the climate of fear around reporting that kind of thing. It would be different if there was proof that she was lying, but otherwise... no.

...Apparently I have Feelings about this subject which come out when I'm tired and overwrought. I apologise for going on about it.
