Yeah, this is one thing where I always try to give people benefit of the doubt, for this reason and also because, I figure, with the staggering amount of stigma that rape survivors have to endure, chances are very few people would want to lie about it. Maybe that's naive of me but it's better to ensure doing no harm.

Which is not to say that assholes like Palmer don't make it harder though. I also used to think nobody would actually try to fake a suicide for attention...

Yeah, all of that. I hate the idea that anyone would lie about rape to get revenge on someone, which is a horribly prevalent idea in our culture... I didn't even go through the legal system when I was raped, and I still felt that stigma when I told people about it. Plus, like I said above, I do feel like - all else being equal - the lie which allows people to believe their own experience, while not at all a good thing, is still better than the assumption which leads people to question it.

That bit about the suicide, though... yeah. I threw up a little in my mouth when I heard that, and that's not hyperbole. I mean, I have been in enough situations where I'm worried that someone might try to off themselves that that got to me on a really visceral level. Ugh.
