...maybe it's because my family doesn't celebrate adult family members' birthdays (we text/facebook message each other happy birthday! but that's it) but I'm having difficulty being very sympathetic with this.

If it's that important to you, next year host your own party?

Except, I think they're annoyed that they didn't even get told "Happy Birthday" on the day, not that they didn't have a party. I read the secret as the OP's birthday was entirely unacknowledged.

And yeah, my family doesn't really celebrate birthdays either, aside from texts or FB, so I know where you're coming from. It's just that I can see why OP might feel hurt, too.

My family doesn't throw parties for adult family members either but we still at least acknowledge when it's someone's birthday. It's rude not to even mention that oh hey, it's Auntie Sally's birthday today, let's wish her Happy Birthday too!
