A good friend of mine recently started working with me at my job (we've both worked at the same place for a couple years but never together), and I was really excited at first because 1) I love my friend of course and 2) my previous coworker was as dumb as a bag of rocks. Well, turns out my friend, while not stupid, is INCREDIBLY FUCKING LAZY. I will tell her specifically what needs to be done and then an hour later she'll be 10% of the way through it, when anyone else would have been finished. Until today I thought maybe I just wasn't being clear, or something... but then I happened to pass by her late in the afternoon and see that she was playing Words with Friends on her phone.

I'm so frustrated I almost want to cry... her shift is over before mine, so everything that doesn't get done falls to me. I've been staying an extra hour every night just to get done.

tl;dr: my good friend is a lazy fuck at work and I can't seem to get through to her about it. HELP!

Srsly, CALL HER OUT ON IT. If she gets butthurt then she shouldn't be working there.

Have you tried explaining that all the jobs she doesn't get finished fall to you on top of all the regular assigned tasks you have? And that it's really stressful and bothers you? You could also suggest that you've noticed she seems pretty easily distracted by her phone and might want to leave it at home/in a locker/somewhere else.

There's no way to know how she'll react (and honestly, it probably won't be good), but I feel if you're going to say something it should be this. Maybe she doesn't realize how difficult or frustrating it can be for you and only needs a reminder.

yeah, unfortunately it's usually not a good idea to work with close friends even though it seems like something that would be pretty awesome theoretically. Same goes for working with your SO

See also: rooming with your best friend. You can maybe live with knowing your friend is irresponsible with money...until their bad money habits put you in danger of eviction.

I would try to explain to her that she is making your life miserable as nicely as possible without implying she's doing it on purpose. If she throws a fit or doesn't do anything about it then I would dump her as a friend and report her to my boss.

Maybe I have a high standard for friends but one of them is that they can't be fucking me over.

Tell her that you're doing extra work if she doesn't finish her tasks. If she loves you as much as you do her, she wouldn't want you to go through unnecessary work.

are you the one who gives her all of her assignments? if so, maybe you could try something like, "X is what you need to do...think you could finish it in about [fair amount of time]?" if she senses an actual time limit, she might be more likely to put her phone down.

This. If she keeps goofing off, then I'd sit her down and say something like 'Look, you know I love you but I really need you to finish your work. When that doesn't happen, I end up having to stay longer to finish and I can't keep covering for you.'

My sympathies, OP. Whatever you decide, you do have to sit down and talk with her at some point because she's not just being a shitty co-worker, but a shitty friend.
