Is it normal to remember feeling pain in a dream?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know you can't be in actual pain in dreams, but last night, I dreamed that something happened to me and I felt like I was in loads of pain. The thing that happened has happened to me before in real life, so it could've been the memory of that manifesting even though it happened in a new way in the dream. I'm just wondering if anyone here has a better way of making sense of it?

I don't know if it's normal but I have had dreams where I am in pain before. I've also had dreams where I've died. They are not pleasant.

Like anon above, I too have felt pain and even died in dreams.

And, yeah, it's totally not fun to be, say, stabbed with a sword in the stomach, or having your legs crushed under rocks, or falling to your death, or drowning or being burned alive.

I, uh, don't know how normal it is.

It happens to me pretty much every time I'm injured in a dream.

But I'm not sure if it's normal or not. I have a history of really insane vivid dreams where I can taste food, read, and other things people always say you can't do for some reason.

wait, you're not supposed to be able to read in dreams? 'cause I've done that a lot... I also feel pain, too.
Can't remember tasting anything, but I don't usually eat in dreams, so it's probably that.

I don't know if it's normal, but it certainly happens to me a lot. Then again, I'm almost always hurting anyway, so it may be that when I feel pain in a dream it's 'cause I'm actually in pain in real life and it's just my brain's way of never letting me forget it.

Yeah, as far as I know, it's totally normal to manifest the memory of a sensation in a dream. Everyone's different, some people hold more vivid memories of certain things, like pain or taste or touch, than others, I think, and are more likely to re-experience them. Like, I read books in my dreams because I've always been an avid reader, despite written words looking like gibberish being a popular way for people to tell they're dreaming.

I had a bad accident myself that I felt in my dreams for a while as well. Usually the dreams go away as time passes and your brain has new things to think about. If it becomes a problem, however, I would ask your doctor if there are coping mechanisms or strategies to help you sleep better.
