Writing... team? Isn't it just Todd now?

I don't care for his writing style as much as his mother's, but perhaps he holds less poisonous views.

not OP

Sorry to burst your bubble there, but not really :( His books kinda pop out with some weird sexism here and there :C

But the reviews for this one are pretty good, even by people who are a bit tentative like me. Someone said this "Sky Dragons fits easily into the Pern continuum. It has many of the good things of the earlier books, while undermining or subverting several of the problematic elements. Today’s twelve-year-olds should be happy. So will those of us who remember Dragonflight and Dragonquest fondly, but find the presence of the 1970s Sexism Fairy a bit hard to take."

*cautiously interested*

OP, take one for the team then let us know how it is?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read a Pern book in ages (although 14-year-old me? Wanted one of those dragons SO. BADLY. Or at least a fire-lizard.) I have no interest in the new books.

But the phrase "1970s Sexism Fairy"? Totally amazing.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But will they be as formulaic? That's my question.

I read about half of the first Pern book and then didn't finish it :/ I have the first 3 or 4, but I just can't get into them.

TW: Discussion of rape

After what she said, I can't associate Anne McCaffrey with anything but ass rape. Seriously. That's the first thing I think about whenever I see or hear her name. Anne McCaffrey? Ass Rape!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
WOAH WAIT WHAT

fuck. fuck fuck fuck. and with that single line I suddenly got very excited and interested. Noooo. Because I only read the first one of their combined efforts and it was horrible, her son cannot write. But maybe he's improved?! Argh it's out already.

I'm always so divided over Pern books. I still really like the older ones (especially the almost standalones), but the newer ones? Argh.

(when little I was convinced if chosen I'd get a blue and older, well, now I'd hope that I would get chosen by a blue cause it'd make sense to me)

HA, yes. I read the Menolly books as a kid, the first...two? Where there just two? And i loved her all tough and running away and having wee dragons all to herself.

But then she got older and got stupid. *sigh*

But i still have some fond memories of those books.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Those books got me into McCaffrey! I was having a very rough pre-adolescence when I got into those books, and they were so, so important to me.
The third one was about her friend Piemur. But there was a Menolly/Sebell sex scene on a boat, IIRC.
Someone should make a harper hall miniseries. It could be terrible, and I would still watch it.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-06-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
YES! Me too. My sister was way into the Pern stuff so i started reading those because of the cover art, and loved 'em. Piemur sort of irritated me - i didn't want to read about some dumb boy!

But then i was reading the ones with Ruth the white dragon and them discovering the buried...uh...not spaceship but building or whatever? Realizing they had been in space once? That was neat.

I always bothered me that it didn't take them very long to go from spacemen to people who had slaves (drudges). Very weird and kind of ooky.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I preferred the Dragonsdawn book. I think she established a lot in the first short story and novel that was very dystopic and feudal and didn't fit the tone she wanted for the later books. Compare the beginning of Dragonflight with The Masterharper of Pern and you wouldn't believe it's the same planet.
Anyway all of McCaffrey's books are about a priviledged class of people that knows better and overcome the ignorance of the common folk. Either born psychic or born a feudal lord, it was always pretty skeevy.

It's been like 15 years since I was into McCaffrey, but apparently I am still ready to nerd out at the slightest provocation. My apologies for the length!

Honestly, I always wanted a bronze. And that's cis(ish) straight lady person here. I wanted a bronze.

Still kinda do. Maybe a brown.

I kinda wish that the Pern fanfic community was different. I know why is is so oddly stunted, what with it being, like, 98% OCs--both history and people really wanting to put themselves in that world. But I still wish that like most of my other fandoms, it had a boatload of fic that dealt with all manner of sexuality and gender.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's something odd about the fandom, maybe because they were essentially gagged for so long? Or that most of it is RP? Or just hard to find. I only read the one ongoing fic and kinda ignore the rest of it. :(
also i think the fandom's getting kinda old and stuck in its "ways" with fan canons worked out, so I guess maybe with luck the new books will bring in some new writers/artists with fresh ideas

Have to admit though, this is one of the fandoms where I prefer to read OC stories to ones about the characters ._.

DA

I've never liked Pern fanfic, but this secret and the comments have given me a desperate yearning for a fic about the first male Queen rider.

No idea if you're even interested in Avengers but there's this crossover featuring Tony the first male Queen Rider: http://archiveofourown.org/works/71786/chapters/95038

AYRT

THANK YOU BEAUTIFUL ANON

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I totally had a really detailed self-insert (okay, straight up Mary Sue) that was the first female brown rider. Never wrote anything down, but it was a fun mental playground.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I've read all of these. The latest book (the one in the picture) does portray a main character in a lesbian relationship. Although actually theres just a lot of polyamory.

As far as the quality of the books go - they've gotten pretty repetitive, and new characters keep getting introduced when I'd rather see some resolution for characters from say the last book.

Also, c'mon guys, be nice - Anne McCaffrey passed away a year or two ago and she was like eighty-something, so of course she would have different views than you.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Unaffected by polyamory and oooh she does get a lesbian relationship? That perks my interest.

Would you say it could work as a stand alone I could just jump into and read? or would reading the other books be kind of necessary. Is the writing ok (which older book would you compare it to style-wise?). Would you say you enjoyed reading it? Was it engrossing? Nostalgic? Kind of a boring chore?

She's dead, she's not going to care about people talking about her views and her son is very much alive (and of course we will discuss his views. New book! Want to know if I'm going to enjoy it or be creeped out :( )

Would you rec it to buy, y/n? (no library so it's buy or don't read for me, would you say it's worth the money?)

I always feel the need to defend Anne McCaffrey whenever this comes up. She came from a different time. The early Pern books were quite progressive for the late 60s in gender and sexuality areas, even if they're not by today's standards. She was still writing into her eighties. Cut her some slack.

That said, the quality of the books varied wildly (passionately loved some, violently hated others) and Todd's are mostly crap.

[personal profile] hiyami 2013-06-15 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I always think it's funny that she's getting so much hatred for her "views" when her Pern novels, to me, were the first I read as a teenager that heavily featured characters having unconventional sexualities. And not looking down at it most of times.
Implying all blue and green riders have gay sex/relationships, having people making the difference between sex and love, or being able to be in different relationships...
Well, I bet some people would say Kylara was an example of slut shaming, while she was just terminally egotistic and it also translated in her sexual behavior, among other things.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I always just give her the 'grandma factor' benefit of the doubt.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-17 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. I don't care how progressive the series becomes, I can't get over how substandard his writing is compared to his mother's.
