Okay but what if they click the link and leave the window open to read later? Or leave the window open while they sit and think about what to comment? Idk this just seems like a really unreliable way to conclude that your friend is not reading the stories.

That could definitely be it; I personally have a bunch of tabs running at once, and I often leave open stuff I'm meaning to get to but will get to later.

You watch the hit counter to police your friend's reading habits. Okay then. That's not weird.

This sounds unhealthy and you need to let it go. There are also definitely legit reasons for your friend to not click the story the same day they comment.

I obsess over writing comments on fics I really like. Especially when I know the writer. Sometimes, there a 2 - 3 days between reading and commenting. Yes, even if it's only a few lines in the end.

Orrrr they click it and leave the tab open and not read it until later. Maybe they save it to their e-reader and read it while on the go. maybe it doesn't fucking matter and you crazily obsessing over the fucking hit count is kind creep there, chump.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* Really? You're going to decide they're not really reading your fic based on your *hit count* not going up?

Here's how I read fic from authors I like. Right away. Like, as soon as it's posted or within a few hours. However, I almost never leave feedback right then and there. Seriously, I've been a week late leaving a comment - but I read the fic. Something else I do? Open a tab and leave it open until I have time within the next day or two to sit down and seriously read it.

Personally, I think you ought not to be so paranoid or be so naive as to think they're just faking you out.

You're being a tad melodramatic and over-concerned about your friend's reading habits.
(reply from suspended user)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are creepy as fuck.

Also, I currently have over 25 tabs open - some of them has been open for over a week.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I sometimes leave feedback multiple days after reading, and especially if I liked something and want to write a meaningful comment. The hit count wouldn't reflect that. And it seems a little obsessive to make these connections.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I always read a story and then comment later, like a lot later. It's just something I do. And even if your friend isn't actually reading your stories it's probably because they're honestly just not interested, but they don't want to be confrontational about it. Seriously, just let it go.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you're really not the sharpest tool in the box, are you?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I get your point, but seriously. You need to chill. Relaaaaxxx.

You sound a little creepy, kid.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
How about being grateful they care enough to comment at all, for ANY reason? So what if it's pity, but you don't KNOW it is. You've got an awful insecurity complex and that will harm you a lot more than just in your writing down the line. Like it or not, you're judging your friend when they are doing something nice for you. Appreciate the little things in life, don't hate on them.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, stop being a creep, OP. That's just plain obsessive and weird.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
How would they leave a comment or kudos without clicking on the fic? If your fic is on LJ/DW, they'd have to be on that page to comment. If you linked to Ao3 and they kudosed, they'd have to click on that to kudos. Either way you know they were on the page of the fic whether or not the hit count goes up and whether or not they read it.

I really like the layout of this secret. That picture as a background-border kind of thing looks lovely!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Unlike most commenters, I have some sympathy for you. You feel like they are *lying* to you.

However, consider how you want this to turn out. Do you actually know this person IRL, know that they are real and not some kind of bot/puppet? If they are real, and their comments are along the lines of 'Hey, nice' or 'great fic' when their comments on other fics are more detailed and talk about how they liked a particular character and what happened in the fic, then decide whether you want to be glad that they are trying to be nice to you (albeit misguidedly?) and just appreciate their friendship OR you can confront them and risk losing their friendship because who the fuck questions their friend's comments.
Maybe they comment briefly on all fics, and are one of those multi-tab users above... (I know some of those, and they are definitely genuine and over many, many years I have finally got to know them, but they still leave very brief comments, but I *trust* them now)

But if it really disturbs you and you are actually suspicious about their motives - just doing it so you'll support them in some argument/venture - and willing to risk losing all those 'hey, nice' comments, ask them about it and if they don't come up with a straight answer for you, I say ban 'em.

You've every right not to be lied to, OP, but let them have their say. But it's your journal. Don't be too suspicious unless you *have* to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Along with the other suggestions as to why the hit counter hasn't gone up. I save my friend's original fic ideas in word so I can reread them whenever and highlight/organize/write commentary, then I overthink all my commentary and either simplify it a lot or make it a long critique/analysis. So that's another possibility.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're being really unfair to your friend. Try being a better friend and trusting them instead of obsessing over your hit count and second guessing them.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe this person saves the fic when you first post it and then reads it and comments? I do that sometimes. see a link to a fic, open it, save it and a day later read it, or read it right away and comment the next day. it doesn't mean they're pretending, they might be but there are other explanations for this.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people read a story but don't comment till days or weeks later, till they can find the time and energy to write a comment. I've done this many times.
