You can't judge a series by the fanfic representations of characters. It just doesn't work.

How does one hate Jean Valjean?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently because his name is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that was probably more of a dig at les Amis de l'ABC? Because LBR most of them have pretty insurmountable names by fanfiction standards

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-06-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to be blunt, but that's moronic. But hey, it's your loss if you fail to read the book due to those reasons.

I don't understand

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Why people read fanfic for books/movies/shows that they are not fans of?

Re: I don't understand

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Among other possible answers:

A) Written by a favorite author
B) Crossover with another series
C) On a friend's rec list
D) Includes favorite tropes/kinks
E) Curiosity/to see what all their friends are talking about
F) The summary sounded interesting

And she apparently hates it all, to boot.

*shrug*

Sometimes if your fandom doesn't have a dearth of fic, you want to read a long plotty fic, or a fantasy AU, or a cliché light-hearted high school AU, or just a fic that's been recced everywhere and is really good. And if you have at least a passing familiarity with a popular fandom, then yeah, you might want to read some of its fic.

I read loads of Dean/Cas fics for SPN before I actually watched it (and then realized that while I kind of ship it, I didn't want to read fics for them at all).

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder what drives people to submit secrets that just scream 'I AM A FUCKING MORON' to this degree.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If that's of any comfort to you, the names are not common in French. If you ever want to, perhaps you'll want to read the book, since the fics probably come from the latest film, which itself is an adaptation of an adaptation... Perhaps you'd like it better with less canon filters. Or not, whatever floats your boat!

What.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-06-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So you decided you hated this... based on... fanfic characters.

You are the opposite of what I hate: The "Fan" who only is in it for the fandom.

And yet... I detest you equally as much as them. Interesting. Same coin different sides and all that.

Re: What.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you hate fans who are only into something for the fandom? what are they harming?

Re: What.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
....Because of people like OP, who bitch about things they know literally nothing about.

This

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-06-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
People who gush over things they know nothing about are the same though. Usually they spout off about fanon or OCC-interpretations of characters like it's fact.

Re: This

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Your thoughts on people who identify as fans of the fandom rather than the thing itself? (Ie, gush about how good the art output is and treat characterization as irrelevant to their enjoyment)

Re: This

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-06-15 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine. They are being honest about what they like and what they are into. They aren't claiming to be fans of something they aren't.

Take the TF2 secret poster yesterday. I got no problem with people who let you know what's up. Hell, I gave them porn!

It's when you start pretending your part of something you aren't, or worse, pretending you're a damn expert.

Re: What.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
You "detest" such people? I just laugh at them and carry on.
It's not like they're ruining anything. They're just a little embarrassing.

[personal profile] al28894 2013-06-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I was the opposite. My dad got a DVD of the 10th Anniversary during the year it came out (I was only four years old) and he would often play the soundtrack CD whenever we are driving. It was what bonded our family together from an early age and now me and my sisters -and my mother!- can all sing some of the more famous songs of the musical together.

So... yeah. I find it kind of strange that you would hate this before ever reading up on the canon whereas I loved it before I even knew what Les Mis is.

Are their names too complicated to pronounce or spell for you?
Do you want them all to be named "Belle", "Gaston" and "LeFou"?

(That rhymed because I sang it)

You are aware of the incredible amount of shaky characterization and outright OOC fic there is out there, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I take it this is particularly digging at les Amis de l'ABC?

Because as a fan of the source material, the movie fandom's outpouring in regards to the barricade boys is so frustrating.

If you haven't read the novel, the characterization for these guys is flimsy and/or non-existent. I get not wanting to read one of the most stupid-long books in the world just to get your manporn on, but at the same time, I just get irked when people reinvent the characters wholecloth without considering anything beyond how hot the actors are.

I believe part of me is still bitter that the weird Amis shipping is what exploded as opposed to freaking VALJEAN/JAVERT but welp.

That said, if we simply MUST write the Amis in modern college AUs, can someone at least write something intelligent and reflective using the Occupy movement as the springboard? My partner and I spent the night joking about it after seeing the film and now I want it so terribly much.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-15 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, I'm working on something like that (not specifically Occupy, but pretty close), and while I'm enjoying the writing of it I'm really nervous about finishing and posting it, because I feel like fandom will probably think it's OOC.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, none of the writers in the fandom want to tackle Occupy. I'm not American, but apparently there was a lot of racism and anti-semitism in the Occupy movement and it was all just a very big mess so yeah, the fandom tries to stay away from it.

I did read three or four fics that present Grantaire as a former idealist who was participating in the movement and only became a cynic after it all failed. Actually, I think I also remember a fic in which Marius was an undercover journalist during OWS, and the amis are all living in the park.

There's also a lot of May 1968 fics for this fandom, but I haven't read any because that's just too heartbreaking for me.
